Solennité de la Sainte Trinité?

Année 2017

L’Église consacre ce dimanche à la célébration de la Sainte Trinité. Nous sommes toujours dans le mouvement de la Pâque et de la Pentecôte, dont le point culminant réside précisément dans la révélation d’un Dieu en trois personnes, Père, Fils et Esprit Saint. Révélation aussi inouïe qu’inattendue, nulle part ailleurs sans doute le mot « mystère » ne trouve plus grande application qu’au mystère de la Trinité.

Au Moyen âge, une légende attribuée à saint Augustin, l’un des plus grands Pères de l’Église à avoir médité et écrit sur la Trinité, met celui-ci en scène avec un enfant (un ange ?) qui s’appliquait à verser l’eau de la mer dans un trou creusé dans le sable. Quand Augustin interroge l’enfant sur ce qu’il fait exactement, celui-ci lui répond : « J’ai décidé de mettre toute l’eau de la mer dans ce trou. » Le saint lui fait alors remarquer la vanité de son action, ce à quoi l’ange lui réplique qu’il est tout autant dérisoire de chercher à expliquer le mystère de la Sainte Trinité !

Cette histoire peut nous apparaître pleine de vérité. De fait, comment donc enfermer la Trinité dans des formules explicatives avec toute la pauvreté de nos mots face à l’immensité divine ? Et pourtant, il n’y a pas de plus grand contresens sur la notion même du mystère chrétien, ni d’ailleurs de plus fausse lecture de la théologie de saint Augustin qui n’a jamais suggéré une telle impossibilité. La foi n’interdit en rien de pénétrer par la raison la compréhension de ce que nous croyons. Pour la raison, le mystère n’est pas un « tabu » mais au contraire une source inépuisable de vérités et de lumières.

Bien sûr, nos mots, ceux que la Bible ou la théologie utilisent notamment pour évoquer le Mystère de la Trinité conservent leur dénuement. Dieu est Père, Fils et Esprit Saint dans une mesure que nous ne pouvons pas mesurer. Le pape Paul VI, dans son credo, avait cette belle formule : « Dieu trois fois saint, infiniment au-delà de ce que nous pouvons concevoir à la mesure humaine ». 

Si Dieu dépasse effectivement nos conceptions, il n’est pas pour autant en dehors de nos existences humaines. Les évangiles, les apôtres, leurs successeurs, jusqu’à chacun de nous à vrai dire en témoignent, le Dieu trois fois saint est le Dieu tout proche, accessible à tous : « Si quelqu’un m’aime, dit le Seigneur, il gardera ma parole, et mon Père l’aimera et nous viendrons à lui, et nous ferons chez lui notre demeure » (Jn 14,23).

Sainte Élisabeth de la Trinité a rédigé une belle prière qui peut tous nous inspirer : « Ô mon Dieu, Trinité que j’adore, aidez-moi à m’oublier entièrement pour m’établir en Vous, immobile et paisible comme si déjà mon âme était dans l’éternité ; que rien ne puisse troubler ma paix ni me faire sortir de Vous, ô mon Immuable, mais que chaque minute m’emporte plus loin dans la profondeur de votre mystère ! Pacifiez mon âme. Faites-en votre ciel, votre demeure aimée et le lieu de votre repos. Que je ne Vous y laisse jamais seul, mais que je sois là, toute entière, toute éveillée en ma foi, toute adorante, toute livrée à votre action créatrice ».
